We will have a new layer of competition in our TOC this year. In the past, we determined our club championship by having each club designate a four-person (or fewer) team. This year, BASS has inaugurated a Club Team Championship in which each member of the national winning team wins a fully equipped Triton boat. A very big deal. Here is my current understanding of how things will work:
We will use our TOC to determine right of first refusal to fish at the regional level of the Club World Championship. The BASS rules are slightly different from our own. In the upcoming Championship, clubs with over 25 members may designate two four-person teams. Qualifying clubs may also augment their teams with two additional current club members (no ringers) for regionals. Up to six anglers per team may fish regionals. Obviously, a team with fewer than six members is at a huge disadvantage. Total weight wins.
The field at the regionals will consist of up to 36 teams from North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. Entry fee is $1,500 per team.
Please note: clubs cannot expect any financial support from the MN Fed.
If any state does not enter its 6 teams, other states may enter additional teams to get to a full field. Protocol to be determined by state presidents at the regional level. In 2007, the regional championship will be held 8/1-4/07 on Lewis and Clark Reservoir.
The top six teams from each region move on to the national championship. There are no further entry fees. Again, each member of the national club championship team gets a boat.
Payouts are at the regional level are tricky: BASS takes the greater of 30% or $16K off the top of the entry fees for its expenses. 50% then goes to tourney payback; 20% to payoffs in the championship. Therefore, it behooves us to enter a full field for payoffs to be meaningful. If the field is small enough, it is conceivable that the regional winners wouldn't even get their entry fees back! Some (much?) of the prizes at the regional level will be sponsor-supplied product.
I know this is new, different and complicated. Please forward any questions and I'll try to answer or get you the straight scoop from BASS.
