2012 Tournament of Champions
Starting on Labor Day weekend, approximately 140 anglers arrived in the Duluth area to practice and prepare for the Minnesota B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Tournament of Champions (TOC) on Island Lake Reservoir. These 140 anglers qualified from their local clubs, representing 29 clubs from all over Minnesota. In addition to the TOC, an alternates' tournament was held on Fish Lake on September 5th. The weigh-in was at Hi-Banks Resort (http://www.hibanksresort.com/) on Fish Lake and a select few top finishers advanced to the TOC.
Anglers come from all over the state for many reasons; foremost is the camaraderie of fellow anglers and secondly to qualify for the 2013 Bass Federation Northern Divisional. The top 12 anglers from the TOC will advance next year to fish against 7 other State Teams from Wisconsin, Indiana, South Dakota, Michigan, Iowa, Illinois, and Ohio on Lake Michigan in late summer 2013. At stake there is a chance to fish in the B.A.S.S. Federation Nation National Championship and become one step closer to a Bassmasters' Classic berth.
The Wednesday's night banquet was held at Edgewater Resort and Waterpark (http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.duluthwaterpark.com&h=xAQFhF-nxAQEPl5uuQ30_5VrJSkELiwLoxAIEwpXQmstdoA&s=1). A silent auction and raffle raised money nearly $3000 for The Boys and Girls Club of Duluth. Donations included gift certificates, tackle boxes, rods, reels, and tackle from Marine General and Island Lake Inn & Campgrounds.
"Island Lake Reservoir is a new, and exciting venue for the Minnesota B.A.S.S. Federation. The local community has been very receptive and is welcoming us with open arms." says Peter Perovich, Federation President. "We really appreciate the support we get from Skeeter Boats, MinnKota, Hummingbird, Rapala, Lamiglas, Solar Bat, Visit Duluth (http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.visitduluth.com&h=ZAQEmY8-JAQHyGTYHsSX7AO1tz_xrw5AZFHSq68C57DSvpA&s=1), and Duluth Bass Club."
"Well the tournament and anglers were great. Even with a tough bite and weather changing, we saw some very good weights and fish too." says Doug Pirila, Duluth Bass Club President and Federation North Director. "The local businesses were glad to have us in a normally very slow time and gave us lots of deals. The residents were overwhelmingly supportive and happy to see us too."
