Conservation Update: August 2002

Attention Bass Federation members, families and friends. Conservation is often defined as "wise use" of our natural resources. One way to best insure that this happens, is to make sure that the right people are in office. So, I'd like to recall your attention the following MOHA press release. I'm taking what happens in November very seriously. Vern Wagner, Conservation Director

MOHA CALLS HUNTERS AND ANGLERS TO ACTION The Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Alliance leadership knows that in close elections sportsmen and women represent the crucial "swing vote," and so it is calling on hunters, anglers and trappers to get involved in the fall elections more than ever before, according to Jim Klatt, MOHA President. "The word has gone out through the MOHA Board and its network of sportsmen's clubs and conservation group chapters that we are very serious about supporting candidates who support our mission," said Klatt. "Candidates will be asked pointed questions and either be held accountable for broken promises or credited with delivering what is best for fish and wildlife." The Alliance, which spearheaded the successful Constitutional Amendment to protect hunting and fishing in the state, includes members from groups like Pheasants Forever, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, Minnesota Waterfowl Association, Minnesota Trappers Association, Minnesota Bowhunters Inc., Safari Club International, Women Anglers of Minnesota, Minnesota BASS Federation, Minnesota Trout Association, North American Outdoor Group, Outdoor Heritage Education Center, Minnesota Weapons Collectors Association, North American Bear Foundation, Minnesota Duck and Goose Callers Association Minnesota Firearms Safety Instructors, Outdoor News, Muskies Inc., Minnesota Sportfishing Congress, Outdoorsmans Weekly, and Ducks Unlimited. MOHA is urging sportsmen to get an absentee ballot if they plan to be out of their precinct during the election. It is also offering sample questions for hunters and anglers to ask politicians during local campaign stops. Some of these questions include: Q. If elected, will you support legislation for a dedicated fund, like the recently proposed 3/16ths of one percent of the sales tax, for the DNR fish and wildlife budget? Q. Do you support an effective and strong Department of Natural Resources? If not, why? What would you change? Q. When was the last time you bought a hunting or fishing license? Do you consider yourself an active outdoors person? Q. Explain your views on whether the DNR Commissioner should come from within the DNR and be an active hunter and angler? Q. What specific ideas do you have to address the water quality issues facing Minnesotans? Q. Are you a member of the Minnesota Outdoor Heritage Caucus, and if not, why? Q. (For U.S Senatorial candidates) What is your position on hunting and fishing being one of the priority uses of the National Wildlife Refuge System, which is coming up on its 100-year anniversary? "Every local hunting, angling or trapping chapter or group should either organize their own candidate forum with their District House and Senate candidates, or be sure to attend forums or meetings with candidates organized by other groups like the League Of Women Voters," Klatt urges.
